Fact or Fiction

My seven-year-old pen pal asked me if I believed in unicorns and to draw her one.

Telling my girlfriend about the request, she relayed a fable story I had never heard, about Noah’s ark leaving without the unicorns because they were out playing. Thinking nothing of it other than a cute story I went to the library looking for a book to draw a picture from. At the first book I picked up my jaw dropped when I flipped it open to a picture of The Mona Lisa and a unicorn. Flipping the pages around more, the book was spot on, explaining the myths and legends in a child’s language. Absolutely perfect for my pen pal’s curiosity.

More so, for me it was a beautiful example of God’s presence in my life. His Timing. That book could have been on any other shelf in any other library, but it wasn’t. To me it demonstrated His hand in my life. He wants the very best for his kids and will do His utmost to help you achieve it.

Only I would recognize the significance that book, that page, in the whole library, it would mean nothing to no one else. And that’s what having a personal relationship with Christ is about. When we begin to know Him, we begin to recognize his nature. And He, us. He speaks our own language.

I once took a writing course on dialogue. Instead of always identifying the speaker the goal was to write dialogue that you could recognize who was speaking without being told. That’s what knowing Christ is like. You begin to recognize His peace, joy, and love and other attributes.

My pen pal and I have this “Shared Ideas” book where we mail activities for each other to do. It was my way of little helping the children, the innocent victims of Covid, stay hopeful and engaged.

I can’t wait to encourage her to keep her curiosity alive and well.
